Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management (SuMi TRUST), Japan’s largest asset manager, has today announced it has made an investment in 18 Salisbury Capital Limited, an emerging asset manager.

18 Salisbury is an independent emerging asset management firm headquartered in Hong Kong and established in 2021. The 18 Salisbury Alpha Opportunities Feeder Fund primarily invests in Japanese equities through a long-short strategy based on bottom-up research.

The Emerging Managers Program is a government backed and industry supported initiative to help smaller, newer asset managers secure institutional capital and establish a track record. It forms part of a wider push to reposition Japan as a global asset management centre.

The investment decisions are driven by in-depth research conducted primarily by the firm’s Tokyo-based analyst team, focusing not on short-term price movements but on identifying structural changes in corporate value.

Through this Investment, SuMi TRUST seeks to generate investment returns while building a partnership with the emerging manager, fostering mutual growth.

Takashi Yokose, SuMi TRUST, said: “As part of our effort to contribute to the government’s initiative of establishing Japan as a leading asset management centre, we’re excited to partner with 18 Salisbury.

“Under the Emerging Managers Program, we continue to seek out opportunities to work with emerging asset managers across Japan and support the development of next-generation Asia-based investment firms.”
