His thirty year career spans three continents in executive leadership roles in financial services across the US, Europe and Asia. Now based in Tokyo, he joined SuMi TRUST AM in April 2018.
Previously, David served as Executive Chairman of Amova Asset Management for four years both in London and in Tokyo. Prior to returning to Japan, he was with Barclays plc as CEO of UK and Ireland Wealth Management, and Chairman of Barclays Asset Management Ltd. Prior to 2009, he served as CEO for Barclays Global Investors (now BlackRock) Europe and Asia. Until 2004, David was with Merrill Lynch in a variety of executive leadership positions in both asset management and investment banking in New York and Tokyo.
David was also formerly a Trustee Director for one of Europe’s largest pension funds and served on the board of the Investment Association and the Wealth Management Association (UK). He currently serves as Chairman of the ICI Pacific Policy Council.
David holds a BA from the University of Florida, an MA in education from Temple University and has completed the Stanford/NUS Executive Program in International Management.
He is a dual US/UK national and is fluent in Japanese.
Takahiro Kobayashi was appointed President and CEO of Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management Co., Ltd. (SuMi TRUST AM) in October 2025. Takahiro is responsible for the firm’s business strategy and has more than 15 years of experience in the asset management industry.

Takahiro started his career at the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (currently Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) in 1998, and joined The Sumitomo Trust and Banking, Co., Ltd. (currently Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank) in 2004. In 2008, while assigned to the Asset Management Division he began overseeing business planning and took the lead in facilitating the Group reorganisation in October 2018, officially joining SuMi TRUST AM the following month. In October 2019, he became the general manager of the Corporate Planning Department where he was responsible for business strategy. In April 2023, Takahiro became the executive officer in charge of implementing of a new trading system and in April 2025 his main area of responsibility shifted to developing business strategy.
Takahiro graduated from Keio University’s Graduate School with a Master of Economics. He is an ARES Certified Master.
Yuji Shiomi was appointed Managing Executive Officer of Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management Co., Ltd. (SuMi TRUST AM) in April 2024, where he supervises the investment division.

Yuji has over 25 years of experience in the asset management business after starting his professional career at The Mitsui Trust and Banking Co., Ltd. (currently Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Ltd. (SuMi TRUST Bank)) in 1993. In his early career, he was involved in product development and system development and became a portfolio manager of quantitative active and passive equity strategies.
Following this, Yuji led the Index Investment Department, the Research Department and the Equity Investment Unit, where he brought a great passion for improving the quality and performance of numerous products to his work.
He graduated from Doshisha University with a bachelor's degree in Economics. He is a Certified Member Analyst of the Securities Analysts Association of Japan (CMA).
